“43rd International Kolkata Book Fair 2019” Focal Theme Country Guatemala

Kolkata, 28 November 2018:

Greetings from the Publishers and Booksellers Guild – organisers of the world’s largest attended book fair, the International Kolkata Book Fair! The 43rd edition of the International Kolkata Book Fair is set to start within 2 months from now. As per the International Book fair calendar it will be open to all from 30th January, 2019 till10th February, 2019.

The fair will be inaugurated on 30th January, 2019 in the presence of our Chief Guest, Honorable Chief Minister of West Bengal, Smt. Mamata Banerjee and other dignitaries. You all will be very glad to know that last year in the new venue 2.2 million book lovers visited the fair and books worth Rs 22 crores were sold. With the love and support of book lovers, the Kolkata Book Fair became immensely successful at the new venue. We would again like to mention the all-out cooperation and support from our Hon’ble Minister Shri Firhad Hakim, the Hon’ble Mayor of Salt Lake, Shri Sabyasachi Dutta and Hon’ble MLA Shri Sujit Bose. Under their supervision the entire area had a total facelift. We sincerely believe that with the inspiration of Hon’ble Chief Minister and with the support of Hon’ble Minister, Hon’ble Mayor and all other Government officials and the love of the book lovers, the Book Fair at Central Park will again be immensely successful.

We are pleased to announce that the Focal Theme of International Kolkata Book Fair this year is – The Heart of the Mayan World- Guatemala.
We have with us today Mr Giovanni Castillo, H.E. Ambassador of Guatemala in India. He will apprise you in brief about the participation of Guatemala at the International Kolkata Book Fair 2019. The detailed information about their participation will be provided in the next Press Conference. Just to inform you that the well decorated pavilion of Guatemala in combination with their literature, culture, films and songs, will be a big attraction @ the 43rd International Kolkata Book Fair.

The international complex will also have the presence of UK, USA, Russia, China, Japan, Vietnam, 11 Latin American countries and Bangladesh. There will be special presence of Iran for the first time at the Book Fair. Few publishers from Pakistan have communicated that if they get Visa on time, then we will also have participation from Pakistan. 2019 will be the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Programs in memory of the Father of the Nation will be organised at the Book Fair.

Publishers from the States of India like Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat, Nagaland, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Telengana, Odisha will also be an integral part of the event. Another important highlight of the Book Fair — 6th Kolkata Literature Festival (KLF) will be held from 7 to 9 February. It will be a collaboration of distinguished writers, directors, historians, authors, theatre personalities, sports personalities, celebrities, film personalities and poets having national and international fame. The days will observe many engrossing sessions, panel discussions on literature, film, drama, music, dance, and many more. The International Kolkata Book Fair 2019 will be open from 12.00 noon. to 8.00 p.m on all days.

The countdown has begun for the 43rd International Kolkata Book Fair 2019 — the largest attended book fair of the world and recognised by International Publishers Association, Geneva. Only 20 days are left before the yearly grand celebration of literature and culture in the city of joy. The fair is to be held from 31 January to 11 February at the Central Park Mela Ground, Kolkata. The inaugural ceremony of the Book Fair will be held on 31 January 2019 at 4 pm.

You all will be very glad to know that last year in the new venue 2.2 million book lovers visited the fair and books worth Rs 22 crores were sold. With the love and support of book lovers, the Kolkata Book Fair became immensely successful at the new venue.

We have already announced that the Focal Theme of the International Kolkata Book Fair this year is – The Heart of the Mayan World – Guatemala. Eminent journalist and author Prof. Euda Morales of Guatemala and Bengal’s Hon’ble Chief Minister Madam Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate the fair. The Theme pavilion will display the literature, culture and tourism of Guatemala.

The details of other performances and celebrations of our Partner Country will be communicated by H.E. Ambassador who has kindly agreed to be the Honoured Chief Guest of this National Press Conference.

As in the previous years, a lucky draw will be held during all fair days and the winners will get book gift vouchers. The grand finale will be organised on the last day of the Fair and the winner, as in the earlier years, will get a car.

In spite of the space constraints, we have tried to welcome the publishers from various states of India and for the first time participants have come from Kerala, Gujarat, Odisha, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu along with the existing publishers from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Assam, Tripura etc.

All the multinational publishing houses will have their own pavilions along with the regular direct participation from the countries like United Kingdom, United States of America, Russian Federation,Bangladesh, Japan, China, Colombia, Peru, Portugal, Singapore, Vietnam, Spain and some other Latin American countries.

The Theme Country- Guatemala Day will be celebrated on 1 February 2019 and Bangladesh Day will be celebrated on 10 February 2019 at the International Kolkata Book Fair 2019.

Starting this year, apart from the Focal Theme Country, we have decided to focus and showcase the literature and culture of one Indian scheduled tribe in the Book Fair. You will be happy to know that Mayel Lyang Lepcha Development Board of West Bengal has come forward and for the first time they  will participate with a stall in the International Kolkata Book Fair. On 2nd February, an evening with the Lepcha will also be organised in the main Auditorium of the Book Fair.

To commemorate the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, this year Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya, Barrackpore will be participating with a stall at the 43rd International Kolkata Book Fair. They will display the exhibits photocopies of Gandhiji’s original letters, his Bengali Handwritings, hand spun threads by many of our National Leaders, some rare books on Gandhiji like Young India, Harijan etc and several publications of the sangrahalaya.

Like other years, the International Kolkata Book Fair will pay homage to our departed stalwarts in literature and other fields in 2018 such as Ramapada Chowdhury, Nirendranath Chakraborty, Dibyendu Palit, V S Naipaul, Mrinal Sen and others by naming the halls and gates of the Fair.

The 6th edition of Kolkata Literature Festival 2019 — an integral part of the International Kolkata Book Fair will be held at the colourful auditorium of the fair ground for 3 days, from
7 to 9 February, 12 noon onwards. The KLF 2018 witnessed the presence of the 65 authors, poets and celebrities from 10 countries ranging from the likes of Shirsendu Mukhopadhyay, Srijato, Sanjib Chattopadhyay, Shasi Tharoor, Ashwin Sanghi, Sudeep Nagarkar, Arunava Sinha, Margaret Alva, Sonal Mansingh, Val Mc Dermid, Graeme Macrae Burnet and others with musical and dance performance of Sourendro and Soumyajit, Pandit Tejendra Narayan Mazumdar, & Tanusree Shankar.
