Publishers and Booksellers Guild
Publishers & Booksellers Guild, Kolkata was formed in 1975 with the principal objective of promoting reading habits among the public and to extend help to the publishers and booksellers. It is associated with a myriad of promotional activities, ranging from organizing book fairs to offering academic programmes in book publishing.
International Kolkata Book Fair, organised by the Guild, is the largest open-air book fair under the sun having a footfall of over 2 million in just 12 days. It also organizes and associates itself with the development of a number of book fairs all across the country, such as North East Book Fair in Guwahati, Assam, Secunderabad Book Fair in Andhra Pradesh, Lucknow Book Festival in Uttar Pradesh jointly with the city based Bengali Associations at the respective places.
The Guild helps organize various book fairs held in different parts of the country such as Delhi, Pune, Mumbai, Nagpur, Bangalore, Bhubaneshwar, Puri, and Agartala. At these book fairs, the Guild displays books published from Eastern India so as to give the visitors an idea about the publishing scenario in Kolkata & Bengal.
The Guild organizes a number of seminars, the subjects of which are closely associated with the different aspects of the book publishing trade—the different types of productions that may be suitable, techniques in marketing, translation procedure, mechanism in total production process, the relevant laws affecting the publishing industry, particularly the entire gamut of the intellectual property rights.
The Guild has introduced a full-fledged Post Graduate Course in partnership with the Centre for Studies in Book Publishing, University of Calcutta. Calcutta University and the Guild signed a Memorandum of Understanding in early 2005 in the matter of conducting the course.
The Guild celebrates the World Book & Copyright Day every year on 23 April. Seminars are organized. A senior editor/author and a senior artist is felicitated in recognition of their contribution to the industry. A free health check-up camp is set up for benefit of the employees of those who are engaged in the book trade.
Since 2014, Guild has been organizing Kolkata Literature Festival during the International Kolkata Book Fair.
